Houston ― it’s the place we call home and without a doubt, the greatest city in Texas (not throwing any shade, Dallas & friends).
Whether you’re a native Houstonian, or you got here as quickly as you could, you know there are a few essential items to enjoy life in the Bayou City. We asked a few #UHBauer alumni and staff to give their must-have picks for Houstonians.
H-Town: Loud & Proud
“Houston is a major sports city. We have the good fortune of three professional teams in our city, so really pick your passion (Rockets, Astros or Texans) and join the local fandom. Wear your passion, that’s essential.
For me, the nostalgia of watching the Rockets win the NBA titles years ago as a boy comes back to me when I go to a game now and see the championship banners in the rafters. I remember Coach Rudy T’s inspiring words “Never underestimate the heart of a champion.” The team were underdogs and their journey brought the first championships won by any major sports franchise in Houston. Representing your local team is fundamental.”
–Derek Brown (EMBA ’11), Vice President, Marketing and Business Development, Mercedes-Benz of Sugar Land
“I would go with Houston sports swag. I proudly wear my UH gear (of course!)”
–Wesley Danson (MBA ’15), President & CEO, BMP Partners, Inc.
Beat The Heat
“You need an RTIC cup to help keep your sweet tea cold all day, especially when it’s triple digits, and help when you’re battling the dreaded Houston traffic. Plus, their corporate headquarters are located in Houston!”
–Jorge Arellano (BBA ’14), Program Manager, Bauer Undergraduate Business Programs
Weather You Like It Or Not
“A small umbrella! I keep a small umbrella in my purse so that I have it with me at all times. It is by far the most useful thing in my purse, and I always recommend to students that they get a small umbrella or a light rain jacket to keep in their backpacks. Houston has some of the strangest weather patterns and you never know what’s going to happen, so it’s better to be prepared!”
–Meredith Walley, Program Coordinator 2, Bauer Honors
“Always have a hair tie, because this Texas humidity is not always agreeable with us curly hair peeps!”
–Whitney Johnson, Program Manager for Student Success, Undergraduate Business Programs.
