You’ve probably heard the saying, “If you love what you do for a living, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Whether you’re a pre-business student who has yet to choose a major or an MBA candidate considering a new field, making career choices can sometimes be overwhelming.
Today, we’re bringing you a few tips to navigate the journey to your dream job.
Take Introductory Courses Seriously.
“Intro to (Insert Word Here)” is more than just a required class. It’s an opportunity to sample what different fields are all about. If you approach your prerequisites this way — rather than just trying to get through them for the sake of the grade — you’re likely to emerge with greater insights about what really interests you. Pay attention to the assignments you enjoy the most (along with the ones you really don’t like) in each class, and talk with mentors and advisors to discover how you can find more of what you love in a prospective career.
Use Your Bauer Resources.
There’s a reason why Bauer = #WhereAwesomeHappens. It’s partly because this is where career development happens. The search for your first or next job doesn’t have to be a lonely one. Our Rockwell Career Center has so many resources to help you make that next career move, including career counselors who can guide you through the process and connect you to recruiters. Check out the Bauer Career Gateway portal under your AccessUH account for articles, personality tests, career profiles and more (learn more about those resources here). You can also schedule an appointment to discuss all things career-related with our knowledgeable RCC advisors.
Intern, Intern and Then Intern Some More.
If you’ve got a pretty good idea of what path you want to pursue but have yet to actually experience the field, sign up for an internship over the summer or a part-time one during the semester. Not only will you be able to practice everyday tasks you’d be performing in a certain job, you’ll also get a firsthand look at company culture, practices and professionals in your field. Internship experience is highly valued these days, so you should consider one even if you’re already sure about your major!
You Do You.
The perfect career will leverage your passions and your skills. Take note of the things you’re already good at — like handling money or leading teams — and the things you love to do in your free time. The place where those intersect will be a big clue into what your dream job should include. Don’t forget to also keep an open mind — there may be a certain job that combines your passions and strengths that you don’t even know exists (that’s another great reason to speak with RCC advisors).
Meet all the People.
You’re a Bauer student. That means you have a vast network of fellow Cougars in the business world who are eager to help the next generation succeed. Cougars hire Cougars, so be sure to attend student and alumni networking events to get to know current professionals in the field or company you’re considering. You’ll most likely end up being interviewed at least once before landing your dream job, but this is your opportunity to interview them about their experiences in the workplace.
