It’s not just something you saw in an ad somewhere: the Bauer MBA is Houston’s MBA. Located in the heart of Houston, the Bauer MBA fuels the city’s workforce, giving students the benefits of an on-campus education led by a world-renowned faculty of researchers and former executives and entrepreneurs.
Today, we are celebrating Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week by highlighting some of our current #UHBauer MBA students, who are sharing what led them to the program.
Professional MBA Candidate
“My name is Mildred Scott, and I am currently in the Professional MBA program at Bauer. I am an attorney and have lived in Houston for almost 23 years. I have worked in the construction/architectural industry that entire time. At one juncture I was running a 94-year-old commercial construction firm.
Through the turbulent times in that industry, it became very clear to me that having an advanced degree in business would not only be optimal for my leadership in a company, but was a necessity. An MBA would give me the requisite knowledge to understand the intricacies of business so that I may ensure the wellbeing and prosperity of all its employees.
With all the other business schools in the area, Bauer was the only choice for me, because of its extensive alumni network and the caliber of its professors. I was confident that the knowledge I gain would allow me to meet all of my future career goals. Bauer’s program has helped me to develop holistic leadership skills, acknowledging that businesses are created to make money, but leaders have a broader responsibility to their employees and their community.”

“I am Maged Marzouk, and I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Cullen College of Engineering in 2014. As a proud Coog, I returned to UH for my MBA and anticipate graduating from the Bauer College in May 2019 with certifications in corporate finance, investment banking and private equity.
I’ve always aspired to be a businessman. I got my BS in engineering specifically to improve my problem-solving skills, and with the express intention of gaining experience in the field before pursuing an MBA. Early on in my MBA career, I was promoted from Maintenance Engineer to Site Development Leader for a leading chemical manufacture, and I credit that promotion to the application of the skills I learned at Bauer.
I made my MBA selection based on the value of the program and return on investment. I discovered that Bauer was by far the best MBA option. The availability of night classes tailored around educating people who are already in the workforce by accommodating to their busy schedules. The true value of an MBA is not found in text books, it’s the experience gained from the exposure to a diverse pool of students and faculty and their different experiences which gives students a holistic view of business that cannot be replicated by solely reading independently.
The collaborative environment of the Bauer MBA classroom develops students’ skills in debate and negotiation. The professors and academic staff at Bauer are dedicated to helping you become a powerhouse in the business world.
The MBA is what you make of it: “If you work hard and engage with your classmates and professors, there are no boundaries to what you can accomplish!”
Full-time MBA Candidate
“I am an active duty officer in the United States Coast Guard, and was recently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander after serving nearly 20 years.
When determining which University I wanted to attend to pursue my graduate degree, one stood above all the rest, the University of Houston. Bauer College shares the same core values of family, teamwork and excellence that I possess. The faculty and staff demonstrated sincere interest in my personal and professional progression, and the smaller class sizes further encouraged a more concentrated learning experience. Experiential learning opportunities such as the Cougar Fund, as well as student led, process improvement programs (i.e. Graduate Student Advisory Board) have allowed me to apply what I have learned in the program in unique ways that have tangible results.
My next assignment in the Coast Guard is Comptroller of several large accounts. I would not have been assigned that great responsibility nor had the skills to handle the position if it weren’t for Bauer.”

“My name is Thiago Teles and this is my second year in the Professional MBA program at the Bauer College.
In late 2016, my wife and I started looking for international assignments opportunities in the United States. It ended up that, right in the beginning of the process, she was invited by her company to work in Houston. After we moved, I decided to apply to an MBA in a tier one university. One of the first places I visited was the University of Houston. A friend and former student of UH had recommended this program. I attended an information session to learn more about the program and, as soon as I got to the campus, I was impressed with the place and its atmosphere. Another thing that made me very enthusiastic about the course was the quality of the faculty, who are able to combine great academic ability with practical experience.
In Brazil, I worked for 10 years as a tax manager at PriceaterhouseCoopers (PwC). Thus, one of my objectives in the MBA program was to improve my skillset in different areas, such as: corporate finance, marketing and management. In addition, my first goal was to find a job in Houston!
It turns out that even before I graduated in the program, I have already found an outstanding job opportunity. Last January, I started working as a tax manager in an Oil & Gas company, and I am sure that the MBA experience was crucial in the process of finding this job.
As a true Brazilian, I am a big fan of soccer, but since I moved to Houston, I have already become a huge fan of the Houston Rockets and the Astros! Just after our first year in the city, we were lucky to see the Astros winning their first World Series Championship! This year I hope both the Rockets and our UH Cougars win the NBA and NCAA championship.
I also like to travel a lot and have already had the opportunity to visit different countries in South America, Europe and to live for four months in Auckland, New Zealand.”

“Some people are content in just living life, but for me, I’m not happy with letting random circumstances transpire as I embark on this journey. My life is fulfilling when I can help others or society with my work. I’m goal-driven, and in this respect, I want to be a part of an organization or institution that has high aspirations.
Bauer’s MBA program has been the foundation that provided the opportunity for me to refocus my life as I transition from active duty military to civilian. I chose Bauer College of Business because the program provides an unparalleled opportunity to further enhance my career and academic knowledge. The richness of culture and diversity at U of H reflects the amazing opportunity offered by the city of Houston and the vibrant state of Texas.
Additionally, the MBA program continues to develop my leadership skills, offers individually tailored courses for my professional development, and the top tier program has connected me with an outstanding network of industry experts. Bauer MBA has accelerated my professional brand!”
MS Finance Candidate
“I am Chidinma Aham-Neze, an international student from Nigeria. I am currently in my final semester of the MS Finance program at Bauer and this experience has been everything I hoped it would be.
Choosing Bauer was easy for me, because I received my Bachelor’s from University of Houston with a minor from Bauer, so I had a glimpse of what Bauer was really about. I saw first-hand the global nature of the program, prestige of the Bauer, its diversity, great caliber of professors, the opportunities and resources I will be exposed to alongside staff that is intentional about seeing me succeed. Also, I wanted to remain in Houston and I felt right at home with Bauer.
I came into this Master’s program with a mindset to take advantage of all the resources and opportunities available to me while challenging myself to become comfortable with being uncomfortable, and I did just that. This program gave me a platform to develop myself and career through leadership positions and valuable relationships I built with my colleagues, professors and advisors. I will not have landed my prior summer internship without the network I had built through the program and support I received from RCC staff. I am a better person because of this experience and forever grateful!”
