Chris Gervasio (BBA ‘17, MSACCY ‘18) is a #UHBauer alumnus who works for ExxonMobil as a financial reporting analyst and a diehard UH Cougars fan. With the home opener set for Sept. 7, we asked him to share some of his tips for having the best time ever while supporting the Coogs.
As a seasoned tailgater and loud Cougar fan, I wanted to take some time to reminisce about what makes a Saturday football games the very best. As someone who has attended a fair share of home, away and Bowl games, I think I know something about what it takes to have fun!
Here are my six tips on how to have the BEST time cheering on Cougar Football.

Get Your Tickets
First, make sure that you are properly equipped with a student ticket account. Follow this thread by UH Athletics to make sure you get the right account set up. If you don’t get a ticket, it will make trying to get into the game a tad awkward.
Get the Crew Together
It’s an 11 player game for a reason. Football games are never fun alone. That’s why you gotta have a crew to tailgate and stand with. Get your friends together and have a spot to tailgate at. That’s the blessing of being in a student organization, they set the planning up for you.
Get on your Feet
Get inside early if you want to get good seats. And trust me, you’ll want to get good seats. You’re going to want to see our high-energy offense this season. And another thing, be ready to stand. This team is playing for you, the last thing you should be doing is sitting quietly. Be loud, stand and cheer.

Know the Chants
Know the alma mater. Know the fight song. Memorize the horse (and by the way, we start on the left). You already know the womp womp.
Be a Good Sport
Don’t be someone who throws empty cans or bottles. No one likes that person. Be a good sport and don’t try and steal someone’s seat. C’mon we are all adults here.
Be Weather Aware
Here’s the thing, games are really fun. But don’t pay for mistakes during the game afterward. Make sure you’re properly hydrating because the Texas sun is unforgiving. And take care of your skin with sunblock. The last thing you want is to match the red Melcher walls with your skin on Monday morning. If you need more motivation, watch this video on what the sun does to you. Be prepared for weird thunderstorms that may delay games. Or wind chill that makes games chilly.
