It’s no secret — we highly recommend living on campus. There’s no better way to get the full university experience than walking from your dorm to class, making all the necessary pit stops in between, from MD Anderson Library to the Student Center.
But, we also know that dorm rooms can easily become cluttered and disorganized. It’s up to you to keep your space clean, but there are a few items you can purchase to make the job easier.
Here’s our list of 7 must haves for your #dormlife.
Versatile Storage
You can’t have an organized dorm room without storage space to keep all these miscellaneous items that gather throughout the semester. Instead of extra containers that clutter up your room, purchase small furniture with hidden storage space. Many coffee tables, ottomans and stools come with concealed drawers that won’t look bulky or out of place.
Semi-Permanent Decor
Wall art is a simple and affordable way to help a dorm come together, but too much of it can make your space seem smaller. Choose just a few pieces that match your color scheme and show off your style, then use command strips or double-sided tape to display them (since nails and screws aren’t allowed on dorm walls).
Various Lamps
Good lighting can help you stay awake during long study sessions and make your space appear bigger and brighter. Invest in various lamps with different amounts of light — such as a floor lamp, desk lamp and even a clip-on lamp that you can easily adjust for the amount of light you need.
Emergency Snacks
Getting used to that 8 a.m. class might take awhile, so keep sealed snacks in your dorm to avoid skipping breakfast when you’re running behind. Create an emergency stash of snacks like granola bars, chips and trail mix and store them in an easy to access container to grab on your way to class.
High Quality Headphones
A pair of good headphones can drown out everything from your neighbor’s TV to a roommate’s phone conversation. Invest in a high quality pair for when you’re working on assignments in your dorm or taking a well-deserved Netflix break. First Aid Kit
The best way to be prepared for a possible emergency on campus? Keep a first-aid kit handy. Include usual items like Band-Aids and gauze, as well as other things like medicine and a sewing kit so you’ll be prepared no matter what happens.
Cleaning Products
Dorm rooms can get messy fairly quickly, so it’s a good idea to keep cleaning products somewhere nearby. Invest in a small, storable vacuum and other cleaning items like air fresheners, Clorox wipes and paper towels to help spruce your space up easily.
