#BauerGivesBack: Alumni Stories

#BauerGivesBack — it’s more than a hashtag.

For the next three days (April 19-21), we’re looking to show the strength of the Bauer College community through a special online giving campaign. We want to raise $2,017 (or more!) for Bauer student scholarships.

By making a contribution to support Bauer College scholarships, you are pledging your commitment to Bauer students — motivated, driven, creative and ambitious game changers and difference makers. Here, we shares stories from just a couple of alumni whose lives were transformed through scholarships and the generosity of donors.

“These donations bridge the gap between what could be to what shall be.”

I am always very proud to tell people that I am a University of Houston Bauer College graduate.  I attended Bauer where I graduated with a degree in finance in 1999, and later returned for my MBA with a concentration in accounting.

As a first-generation college graduate and minority student, I feel very fortunate for the quality education and financial support that I received from Bauer. Over the years, as I have applied for various job positions, I have seen the look of appreciation when employers review my résumé and see that I graduated from Bauer. Even more importantly, I honestly doubt that it would have been feasible for me to complete my undergraduate studies without the financial assistance that I received from the college. At a minimum, it would have certainly been impossible to complete my studies within a four-year period.

For the reasons that I mentioned above, I am a firm advocate of giving back to the Bauer College.  Alumni dollars support students like me whose financial eligibility under federal education assistance guidelines would not have been sufficient to cover the cost of books, tuition and fees. These donations bridge the gap between what could be to what shall be.

Alumni contributions also facilitate innovation regarding technology and new knowledge.  A higher level of alumni support encourages grant donors to invest in our college, which in turn, attracts some of the most renowned scholars in the business field as Bauer faculty members.  These business minds, in turn, attract some of the most academically talented students, who go on to become great business leaders.  So, our alumni giving catapults a beautiful cycle!  I have committed to continuing my support of Bauer, even as a bequest. I encourage all of my fellow Coogs to do the same.

“When you give to Bauer, you help individuals like me discover their passion and develop the skills they need to lead with integrity.”

Bauer College transformed my life. I know that sounds cliché but it’s so true! The education and opportunities that I received at Bauer helped me develop into the strong, motivated and passionate young professional that I am today. When you give to Bauer, you help individuals like me discover their passion and develop the skills they need to lead with integrity.

I was a recipient of the Jesse H. Jones Leadership Development Scholarship. If it wasn’t for this scholarship, I don’t know how I would have paid for school. Receiving this scholarship allowed me live on campus, which allowed me to take on many student leadership roles and extra projects that helped to develop my knowledge in supply chain.
