#Fall19 is four days away…cue the panic!
But, we have it on good authority that if you follow these pro tips from our #UHBauer staff and faculty, you’ll be set for a successful semester!
Meredith Walley
Program Coordinator 2, Bauer Honors

Pro Tip #1: Buy an umbrella that you can keep in your backpack! On too many occasions I have had students get soaked because they did not have an umbrella on them. A small one won’t take up too much room, and it will definitely come in handy!
Pro Tip #2: It’s never too early to start getting involved! Hit up Cat’s Back and Bauer Rush Week to talk with people and maybe join an organization! (Bonus points if you take your roommate with you! This is a great chance to get to know them better).
Pro Tip #3: Walk around campus and find your classes. Campus can be confusing to navigate, especially in the chaos of the first week. So take a walk, explore campus, and find your classes along the way.

Program Manager 1, Undergraduate Business Programs

Pro Tip #1: Dedicate the first week of the semester towards inputting all your syllabi information on your planner or phone calendar so you can set up reminders of upcoming homework deadlines, exams, etc.
Pro Tip #2: Mingle with classmates in order to create study groups.
Pro Tip #3: Make friends with upperclassmen because they might let you borrow their books from previous semesters so you don’t have to spend money on new/used books.
Whitney Johnson
Program Manager for Student Success, Undergraduate Business Programs

Pro Tip #1: If possible, come to campus before classes start on Monday to find where all of your classrooms are. This is beneficial because on Monday the campus will feel like a beehive buzzing with people ― it can be overwhelming if you don’t know where buildings are, much less your actual classrooms.
Pro Tip #2: As summer ends and before you start the semester, reflect on your previous semester(s) at Bauer – what worked well for you? What didn’t go so well? Where do you want to challenge yourself more? From there, come up with at least three goals you want to accomplish in this new semester. Write them down somewhere you can see them every day. Then, ACHIEVE them knowing you are a part of Where Awesome Happens!

Department Business Manager, Graduate & Professional Programs

Pro Tip: Monitor the Bauer Events Calendar as we host fun and engaging events that are beneficial for our students!
Crystal Lugo
Graduate Admissions Coordinator, Graduate & Professional Programs

Pro Tip #1: Look for the tent at the crosswalk in front of Melcher Hall on August 19and August 20. UH staff members will be stationed there with maps to help you find your classes!
Pro Tip #2: Tell your friends to meet you at the Melcher Hall Starbucks (2nd floor) for a study break and healthy dose of caffeine between classes!
Pro Tip #3: A tip specific to Full-Time and Professional MBA, and Specialized Master’s ― if you haven’t already, I highly recommend you DOWNLOAD CAMPUS GROUPS in order to connect with your Bauer family! Here you can communicate with your fellow grad students and staff, find your degree plan, financial aid information and everything you need to prepare you for and throughout your master’s program.

My advice/tip to students is to have a Growth Mindset. Having a Growth Mindset means operating with the understanding that abilities and intelligence can be developed through hard work, practice and discipline. It also means embracing challenges, being persistent in the face of setbacks and finding lessons and inspiration in the success of others. So instead of saying “I’m just bad at math” say “I can strengthen my math skills through practice.” Stay calm, breathe and remember, you got this!

Bauer Honors Academic Advisor, Bauer Honors

Pro Tip #1: Introduce yourself to your professors in the first two weeks of school. Your professors are your allies, and they will help you when they know who you are. Go to office hours, say hello, and be sure to visit them at least twice in their office hours during the semester.
Pro Tip #2: Go to Bauer Rush Week Tuesday, August 27 – Thursday, August 29. Join at least one student org this fall.
Pro Tip #3: Eat lunch! Students often skip lunch due to a busy class or work schedule. You need sustenance to make it through the day. We have lots of great food options on campus, including some awesome food trucks. Try them out!
Pro Tip #4: Make an academic advising appointment in September. It’s really hard to get an appointment in October.
