So, you’re graduating this month, and it probably feels like you’ve finished the last page in a really big book. We don’t blame you for celebrating and enjoying the moment, but know that you’ve closed out just a chapter in The Book of Life, and there’s a new world out there waiting for you after college.
We asked some recent #UHBauer alumni to share their best advice for new college graduates, and here’s what they had to share.
Create Goals.
“Unlike school, ‘real life’ does not have a rubric and a grading system. Create your own structure by choosing 1-2 goals on the first of each month, then doing weekly check-ins to see if you are still on track. This is a great way for me to make sure I am balanced with work, social activities, personal/professional development outside of work and volunteering.”
-Emma Armer (BBA ’17), Sales Analyst – Americas Aviation Lubricants, Shell
Learning Never Stops.
“Remember that the learning process never ends! It’s okay to feel ‘stupid’ during your first few months at a new job. Just remember to speak up, ask for help, and thank people for their time.”
-Megan Iselin (BBA ’15, MSACCY ’16), Risk Assurance Experienced Associate, PwC
Think Ahead.
“If there is even a remote possibility that you might be interested in going back to school in the near future, take the time now to take the GRE or GMAT. The scores from these exams are valid for five years, and they will be much easier to study for when you are still in ‘school mode.’ Your future self will be grateful that you were thinking ahead!”
-Sarayu Sundar (BBA ’11, M.Ed ’14), Ph.D. Candidate, UCLA
Manage Your Time (Wisely).
“Budget your time in addition to your money. I’m all for the occasional Netflix binge, but try to frame what you do outside of work to better benefit you professionally and creatively!”
-Noha Sahnoune (BBA ’15, MSACCY ’16), Corporate Financial Analyst, ExxonMobil
Build Your Network.
“Start building your network. Even if you get a stellar job straight out of school, you still need to put in the work to build a network. It’s like they say – it’s important to dig the well BEFORE you need the water.”
-Namrata Sirur (MBA ’12), Cofounder, MisFit Communications
“Don’t stop learning! Network, network, network. Stay in touch with former faculty/staff and classmates.”
– Melissa Emekli (MBA ’11), President/CEO, Markka
